The early-ripening ‘Herman’ delivers an abundance of delicious dual-purpose plums ideal for eating or baking. This freestone variety bears medium-sized plums with deep purple-black skin covered in a pale blue bloom and the golden flesh inside separates easily from the stone to offer a sweet, juicy flavour with notes of honey. Ripening in mid-July in southern England, ‘Herman’ is a self-fertile variety that precedes other plums by 2-3 weeks.
When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Stone fruits like the plums should be pruned in the summer because they are prone to a disease called silver leaf which enters through cuts. If you prune in late summer, the sap is slowing but is still running fast enough to seal up any wounds. Check and remove any damaged, diseased or broken branches. It prefers an alkaline or neutral soil pH although grows well in all but heavy clay soils.
